Police and firefighters arrive on the scene to rescue the injured and guide traffic after the accident.

Two pedestrians were killed and one injured in a bus accident which took place in downtown Shanghai on Friday morning, police said.

At 8:30am, a bus knocked down a number of pedestrians near the crossroads of Nanjing Road W. and Shaanxi Road N. in Jing'an District. Three were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Two later died in hospital and the third is still being treated, police said.

The bus driver, a 54-year-old woman surnamed Qian, allegedly told police that she hit the pedestrians because the brakes failed to work properly.

She had not been drinking and was not under the influence of drugs, according to their preliminary investigation. Qian is currently under police control.
