The nation’s biggest and the most complete database on children’s congenital heart diseases, leukemia and tumor has been established at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, providing a detailed information analysis and research platform for children’s serious disease.

The system, which covers information registration, check and analysis, has collected information for 41,199 cases of children’s congenital heart diseases, 9,936 cases of leukemia and 11,473 cases of children’s solid tumor, said officials from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center on Saturday, when nearly 50 children with single ventricle returned to the hospital for a free medical consultation and check-up before the fall of World Heart Day next Sunday.

Congenital heart disease is the top inborn deformity in China, which has 150,000 new cases every year. Children with single ventricle cover 1.5 to 3 percent of the cases. It is complicated congenital heart disease and most children should receive surgery within four to six months after delivery and those with serious condition must receive surgery within one month, doctors said.

Under a complete database system, the center has registered some 1,000 cases of children with surgery due to single ventricle and more than 90 percent of children’s condition are under well control.

“A successful surgery is the first step of the treatment. The follow-up management and long-term medical care especially the connection from pediatric to adult hospital is very important to such children,” said Dr Zhang Haibo from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.
