Ten students from Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School perform a musical for patients and staff at the 5th People’s Hospital of Shanghai.

Ten students from Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School rushed to the emergency hall of the 5th People’s Hospital of Shanghai recently. But were not seeking medical attention, however, rather performing a charity flash mob for patients and staff to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival.

They performed “Dorothy’s Circus Rescue,” written and performed by 4th-grader Li Yunduo and her fellow pupils and directed by Hong Kong musical director and drama educator William Yip.

The musical, in English, tells the story of a girl who leaves home with a talking owl after a quarrel with her mother, who has been forcing her to play the piano every day. They go to a circus but find the animals are being forced to perform against their will. Dorothy persuades her mother to join their efforts to rescue the animals and return them to the wild.

It aims to promote public awareness of the need to protect biodiversity and encourage children to take part in charity activities.

The drama was staged with support from the hospital and charity organization Starriver Charity Sailing.
