Expatriates have been invited to take part in the Shanghai Conservatory of Music's third Chinese Traditional Music Institute program which will run from October 14 to November 18.

The program was first organized by the Shanghai Music Art Development Center of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2015 and has been staged every autumn since.

The institute program this year is open to both university students and expatriates in Shanghai interested in traditional Chinese music.

A series of free programs will be offered from October 14 to 28, including lectures on the theory of traditional Chinese music, Jiangnan silk and bamboo music, a tour at the Silk Road Musical Instrument Exhibition and Peking Opera performances.

New immersion programs will run from October 21 to November 18. These include courses on “guqin”, “xiao” (the vertical bamboo flute), as well as kunqu opera and shadow puppet shows. A fee of 100 yuan (US$14.5) is required for each of the four courses.

All the participants will have the opportunity to showcase their newly acquired skills at a final performance.

Applications are limited to university students with a student ID and foreigners who hold a passport.

Those who interested can register through the WeChat public account of the Shanghai Music and Art Development Collaboration Innovation Center (Shmadcci) by October 14 or phone 15121138182 (10am-6pm).
