Special events are organized for World Heart Day in China.

There are 290 million Chinese suffering cardiovascular diseases, which are the top killer in the nation, said medical experts on Saturday, the World Heart Day.

The annual event was launched all over the world to arouse public awareness and promote preventative measures to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, which are the biggest cause of death. The theme this year is “Your Heart My Heart.”

There are 500,000 new cases of myocardial infarction annually in China. Cardiovascular diseases account for over 40 percent of mortality in the nation.

Hospitals across the nation organized various activities like lectures, free consultation, public talks and science forums, stage shows and exhibition to promote the knowledge of cardiovascular disease prevention and control.

An educational video shot by leading medical specialists and entertainment celebrities was released online to further promote the day.

“Cardiovascular diseases are closely related with unhealthy lifestyle, so quitting smoke, healthy diet, regular exercises and proper health care are all important,” said Dr Ge Junbo from Zhongshan Hospital.
