The concentration of hazardous PM2.5 particles in Jiading District dropped to a record low of 41 micrograms per cubic meters in August during its air and water pollution campaign, down by 12.8 percent over the same period last year, the district government said.

A water plant to turn sewage into clean water has been on a trial run since May 8 in the district's Nanxiang area. So far, the underground plant can treat 50,000 tons of sewage per day. After the construction of its second phase that will increase to 150,000.

The surface areas will be turned into public green space and a science education venue is due to be complete by the end of this year.

Jiading has also included an extra more than 140 enterprises in its volatile organic compounds list for pollution control and treatment.

At TRW Automotive Components (Shanghai) Co Ltd several systems have been installed to purify its emissions, including dedusting and oil mist treatment systems.

Since last year, Jiading has launched drone patrols on sites being monitored for air quality and detected more than 130 problems. These have been reported to neighborhood or town authorities to deal with.

During the district's implementation of an clean air plan, more than 1,700 companies have been shut down with emission treatments at more than 400 major industrial and 500 catering enterprises.

Jiading has dismantled some 267,000 square meters of illegal structures on riverbanks this year and completed the renovation of rain and sewage diversion pipes at 273 sites.
