Chefs compete in run-up to import expo
The city's catering businesses are in full swing for the upcoming China International Import Expo as a service skill competition of Shanghai's catering industry was held on Saturday.
The competition had six categories such as Chinese and Western style business set meals, Shanghai snacks, afternoon tea and restaurant service, gathering more than 100 participants from 62 catering businesses in the city, many of which are food providers of the expo.
"The competition gives consideration to both Shanghai flavors and specialties and the comprehensive skills of participants," said Xu Changning, executive deputy secretary general of the Shanghai Restaurants Cuisine Association. "For example, we require participants to make xiaolongbao, or small steamed bun, shengjian, a pan-fried dumpling, and vegetarian buns, which are three of the most signature Shanghai snacks, and we hope to test their comprehensive skills."
Participants are required to finish their works within two hours and initial rounds of elimination have already been held.
