Workers try to assemble Joseph Klibansky’s “Self-Portrait of a Dreamer” in Jing’an Sculpture Park yesterday.

The widely-anticipated “floating astronaut” sculpture, which will be on display as part of the city’s biennial sculpture fair, will be unveiled to the public on Friday.

“Self-Portrait of a Dreamer” is the last piece to arrive in Shanghai of the 87 pieces on display in the 2018 Jing’an International Sculpture Project, which began on September 20 and runs to December 20.

The work features an astronaut floating in space, holding himself up on the backrest of a chair that resembles the one in Vincent van Gogh’s “Bedroom in Arles.”

A pot of sunflowers helps the astronaut to keep balance, and is a nod to van Gogh's famous “Sunflowers” series.

"Self portrait" is the work of contemporary Netherlands artist Joseph Klibansky who is exploring the concept of balance.

Also, he hopes it will encourage people to continue to be curious and imaginative despite their busy lives.

It has been exhibited in cities all over the Netherlands for the last two years and attracted millions of visitors.

It arrived at the Jing’an Sculpture Park in Jing’an District on Monday night, and is being assembled this week, according to the organizer Purple Roof Gallery.
