Shanghai SMIC Private School has been ordered to suspend its food service and expired food has been sealed after an investigation into food safety issues at the school canteen.

Market supervision authorities in the Pudong New Area received a call on the 12331 hotline about bad vegetables and a messy kitchen at the school’s campus at 169 Qingtong Road on October 19. A site investigation was launched that night with staff from the district’s education bureau, health and family planning commission and the Zhangjiang Town government.

Authorities found moldy tomatoes and some seasonings and semi-finished products in the kitchen that had expired. Authorities collected 21 samples for further testing.

The canteen, which had a valid food business license, was operated by Shanghai Eurest Food Technologies Services Co Ltd.

The bureau is to launch an investigation into all school canteens in the district.
