A man drove away a car that looked exactly like an EVCard shared car and parked it at one of the shared car service’s parking spot, but he was fined 500 yuan (US$72).

As it turned out, the shared car he took is reserved for use by company staff, so he was punished for driving the car without permission, an administrative offense, police said on Monday.

The man, surnamed Miao, works as a driver for those who need to get their vehicles home after drinking.

Miao was hailed for the service on the evening of October 12 and drove a person from the Pudong New Area to Gubei Road in Baoshan District, police said.

It was around midnight and he had run out of public transportation means to get back home to Pudong, so he tried to use a shared car.

Using the app he found a shared car in the underground parking lot of a supermarket, but the car had tire problems, while another car parked next to it was unlocked, although it was not listed on the app, police said.

Miao drove the car away and later dropped it at a parking spot for EVCard shared cars. The shared car company reported to the district the next morning that one of their staff’s cars, parked in the same parking lot, had gone missing.

Miao is seen driving away from the parking lot on the early morning of October 13.

Police caught up with Miao in Pudong on October 16.

They said Miao was fined because he should have realized that the car he drove away was not a shared car, and even so, he never paid anyone to use it.
