Non-invasive fat removal equipment has been approved by the China Food and Drug Administration, with a first batch available at 12 hospitals across the country this month, according to officials in Shanghai.

The non-surgical body contouring treatment uses US-developed cooling technology to eliminate stubborn fat. The patented technology developed by Massachusetts General Hospital was approved for commercial use in 2008.

According to one survey, 84.9 percent of correspondents in China prefer non-surgical measures for fat removal, 31. 8 percent higher than the global level.

Dr Wang Baoxi, from the Chinese Association of Plastics and Aesthetics, said that losing fat was a lengthy process requiring medical support and changes to lifestyle and diet. “The public must visit licensed clinics or hospitals for the treatment and receive proper evaluation for receiving any medical procedure,” he said.
