People walk their pet dogs in Shanghai on October 4, 2018.

Shanghai residents will be able to register their pet dogs and make appointments to vaccinate them on a mobile app, police said on Thursday.

The app will also contain a map on which pet owners can search for government agencies of pet management and pet clinics.

Users of the map will be able to collect points by using the services through the app and be rewarded, a function that encourages people to legally raise their pets, police said.

The app is still under development and the date of its release has not yet been determined.

There are over 180,000 registered pet dogs in Shanghai at the moment, according to the police.

Police said they received about 10,600 complaints regarding dog management in the first nine months this year and about 3,100 were about pet dogs that were not registered.

In Shanghai, the police are in charge of registering pet dogs, punishing rule-breaking dog owners and providing shelters for stray dogs in the streets.
