Premature babies discharged on World Prematurity Day
The pair of premature twins is discharged after spending 86 days at ICU at Xinhua Hospital on November 17, 2018.
The younger brother of a pair of premature twins was discharged from Xinhua Hospital on Saturday after being rushed to the hospital from their hometown in neighboring Jiangsu Province nearly three months ago. The elderly sister was discharged on Thursday.
Both babies were over 2 kilograms and grow in stable condition without brain injury and premature complication after 86-day treatment, said the hospital on Saturday, the World Prematurity Day, which calls for awareness of preterm birth and concerns of preterm babies and their families.
The pair is the first case of emergency air transport of newborn babies in the Yangtze River Delta Region.
The babies were delivered on August 22, the 26th week of pregnancy. The girl was only 750 grams and the boy 950 grams with more severe suffocation.
They were sent by a helicopter to Xinhua Hospital the next day for emergency care and treatment. Their organs were poorly developed and blood vessels were extremely tiny.
The twins’ parents were very cooperative. They went to the intensive care unit to do kangaroo mother care and participated in feeding and bathing to help the babies under nurses’ direction.
Upon discharge, the sister is 2.36 kilograms and the brother 2.58 kilograms.
Doctors said premature babies need long-term and special care after being discharged from the hospital, which has set up a multidisciplinary clinic to offer consultation and direction on feeding, nursing, caring and evaluation for premature babies.
The parents hold the babies at the Xinhua Hospital.
The pair of premature twins is sent to Xinhua by a helicopter the next day after delivery from their hometown in neighboring Jiangsu Province.
