Doctors from Shanghai Xinshijie Eye Hospital conducts free surgeries for children from poor families in Liangshan area, Sichuan Province, under a charity program.

Two teenagers from poor rural families received free eye surgeries in Shanghai thanks to a charity program offering free eye disease checks and treatment for children and teenagers in Liangshan area, Sichuan Province.

Since the program kicked off in September, doctors from Xinshijie Eye Hospital Group, a medical partner of the program, have sent medical teams to Liangshan to screen 28,000 local people, and conducted over 170 free surgeries.

A 16-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, both from the Yi minority in Liangshan, have received successful eye surgeries at Shanghai Xinshijie Eye Hospital recently, the hospital announced today.

The girl, Mu Quli, who has had a serious eye disease since she was three years old, received surgery to her left eye last month in Sichuan, and came to Shanghai to receive cornea transplant surgery on her right eye last week. Her eye sight is expected to recover over 40 percent after the treatment, doctors said.

The boy, Bai Shizhe, who had congenital cataract and whose family was unable to afford treatment, just completed his surgery. Since his condition is very complicated, doctors said it will take time to confirm the effects of the surgery and how much of his vision can be recovered.

“We will keep screening children in Liangshan and make sure no children and teenagers are blind because of poverty,”said Dr Lian Jingcai, president of Shanghai Xinshijie Eye Hospital.
