The 5th Songjiang Chrysanthemum Cultural Festival is underway at Honghua Horticulture Base in Maogang Town. The festival will go through November 25. More than 1,000 chrysanthemum varieties bloom in the base where visitors can appreciate almost all the extant varieties of the flower. Among the varieties, the exhibition showcases rainbow chrysanthemum, its signature variety. The base also has exotic varieties from countries such as Japan and the Netherlands. Visitors can take part in a number of themed activities such as vegetable and fruit picking, a green plant fair, picnics and camping and a Japanese-style party. The Chrysanthemum Feast, a popular activity during the festival, offers visitors a chance to enjoy local food with tables set among the flowers. They can also watch live performances by Japanese florists or make their own garlands to take home. A merry-go-round at the base will bring back memories of childhood. Animals such as rabbits, goats, chickens and geese in a small zoo at the base will be popular with families. Children can take part in activities that include painting and clay figures making. At the fair, visitors can buy chrysanthemum tea, plants, floating flowers and many other novel handicrafts. Food such as roast chicken, grilled fish, sweet potato rice, Japanese-style rice and chrysanthemum drinks are prepared for visitors.
