Ctrip nursery abusers jailed
Eight people were sentenced on Tuesday for abusing children at a day care center run by online tour agency Ctrip.
These include Zheng Yan, head of the center, and seven others, including teachers and nurses.
They received terms in prison ranging from one year to 18 months. Five of those convicted will be on probation for up to 18 months.
Zheng, Liang Shuo and Tang Ying, will be banned from working with children for five years after they finish their jail terms or are released on parole.
The other five, Wu Wei, Liao Hongxia, Zhou Gaolan, Shen Chunxia, Ji Lan, are prohibited from working with children while on probation.
Prosecutors told the court that between August and November 2017, the seven forced children to sniff wasabi and daubed it on the skin of other children. The staff also physically assaulted the children.
Rather than preventing this behavior, Zheng encouraged staff to “teach the children a lesson” for supposed misbehavior.
All eight have admitted their guilt, expressed regret and apologized.
