Lights on at the beginning of a tunnel: police
Shanghai traffic police are experimenting with a camera that captures motorists who fail to switch on low beams when entering a tunnel.
The first cameras are found on the entrances to the Yangtze River Tunnel, an eight-kilometer tunnel linking Pudong New Area and Changxing Island, an important path between urban Shanghai and Chongming Island.
When caught, motorists receive an SMS messages with a warning, police said, and soon offenders will be fined.
A police spokesman told Shanghai Daily that the punishment is yet to be determined.
Motorists with no lights or high beams have a high chance of causing accidents in tunnels.
