Dong Chenzhang, a 6-year-old boy, was presented the top prize in an ink painting and calligraphy competition on Sunday.

The competition was held along with the “Beyond Ink” painting exhibition by the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, which showcased works painted by 31 masters of contemporary ink painting in the theme of the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up.

Between November 11 and December 2, more than 600 children aged between 5 and 17 visited the exhibition and painted there, 65 of whom won prizes in the competition.

Dong said he felt happy to receive the award as he had never studied ink painting before and just painted based on intuition after seeing the exhibits.

At the end of the award ceremony, some of the winners painted a long scroll with the painting masters, bringing the exhibition to an end.

Liu Guosong, director of the institute's newly established Academy of Contemporary Ink Art, said he wished such activities could provide children with access to traditional Chinese ink painting and cultivate their interest in it.
