Doctors create new nose for cancer patient
A local hospital created a new nose for a patient who lost his original nose due to cancer treatment, doctors announced on Wednesday.
The 54-year-old man surnamed Yang from Hubei Province had surgery to remove cancer in his nose in 2015. The operation left only two holes on his face where his nose had been.
The loss not only caused psychological problems for the patient but also brought complications such as frequent respiratory infections.
The only solution was to rebuild his nose and he attended Shanghai No. 9 People’s Hospital, the country's leading medical facility for plastic surgery.
Lead surgeon Dr Dai Chuanchang said the challenge was to create a new nose from nothing. A nose that would not only have shape but also function.
Doctors used Yang’s rib cartilage as support and his own skin to create the nose.
Yang said he was "very satisfied" with his new look.
