The fourth Shanghai Pudong Huju Art Festival will raise its curtain on December 20, presenting more than 10 local cultural performances and a lecture to audiences.

A total of nine zhezixi (episodes), eight Huju operas, a lecture and a show will be staged during the festival, running through December 26. Expats living in Shanghai will also show off their singing skills in Shanghai dialect.

A lecture titled "Shanghai voice: Huju" will be held at the Beicai Middle School, and a number of Huju operas will be brought to residential communities and welfare institutions in the Pudong New Area.

A show on December 21 will gather about 30 Huju fans, with the youngest aged only four, to perform in Shanghai dialect.

Intangible cultural heritage such as Jiangnan sizhu (string and wind music), dragon dances, and Gu embroidery, as well as acrobatics, will be blended into the performances.

The opening ceremony will center on the last 40 years of reform and opening-up and highlight red culture, Shanghai culture and Jiangnan culture to display the achievements, development and allure of Shanghai dialect.

As a local opera of Shanghai, Huju enjoys a history dating back over 200 years.
