Eleven suspects have been detained for allegedly defrauding a phone company by replacing new phone motherboards with used ones, police said on Thursday.

The suspects, including a few professional phone repairmen and those hired by them to help with the fraud, altered over 50 phones worth over 300,000 yuan (US$44,000), police said.

Police in Huangpu District said they started their investigation in late October when a phone dealer on Nanjing Road E. reported the loss.

The suspects allegedly purchased the phones and then asked for a refund one or two days later, claiming that the phones had technical problems.

The suspects were tracked down and apprehended from three districts earlier this month, police said.

They have allegedly confessed.
