Doctors from Shanghai No.6 People’s Hospital adopted a new method to live broadcast complicated surgeries to doctors in Tibet Autonomous Region using only a smartphone, doctors said on Friday.

A Tibetan patient was transported to Shanghai No.6 this week for a complicated clubfoot surgery, which must be divided into two operations in Tibet but can be performed using only one surgery in Shanghai. The whole procedure was broadcast through a smartphone to Tibetan doctors.

This method can convenience doctors on both sides with better results in terms of teaching and learning, said Dr Di Jianzhong from Shanghai No.6, which is well-known for its orthopedics department.

Hospital officials said they will upgrade their surgery schedule regularly for Tibetan doctors so they can choose which they are interested in learning more about.

“I have worked in Tibet helping local medical professionals and I plan to work out a new education and training system to allow Tibetan doctors to grasp basic and necessary skills, which are enough for 80 percent of surgeries and treatments in Tibet," said Dr Shi Zhongmin from the hospital’s department of orthopedics. “Compared with Shanghai doctors flying to Tibet for all medical procedures, this is a better way to improve medical capabilities in Tibet."
