Drunk driver fleeing police on elevated road faces criminal charges

A drunk driver fled from police and drove 6 kilometers on the Middle Ring Road till he was forced to a stop, police said on Sunday.

Traffic police in Yangpu District set up a road block on the exit of the Yangyin Road Tunnel on the ring road to check drunk driving on the night from Saturday to Sunday.

At about 50 minutes past midnight, the driver, a man surnamed Wang, drove past the spot but ignored the police and fled.

The police chased him along the elevated road till its ramp to Yixian Road Elevated Road.

Police said they had to ask a taxi in front of Wang to stop so as to force Wang to a stop.

On the scene, Wang was tested to have a blood alcohol level of 163mg/ml, which means he was drunk driving. The threshold for drunk driving in China is 80mg/ml.

Wang allegedly confessed that he drank some alcohol in Chongming that evening, and then drove all the way to the urban area of the city.

Ni Jiahui, a Yangpu traffic police officer, said Wang will face the criminal charges of dangerous driving for drunk driving and impediment of police work.
