The girl born at only 545 grams was discharged from Shanghai Children's Medical Center after gaining weight and overcoming multiple risks.

A premature baby girl born at only 545 grams, the lightest premature newborn the hospital has ever received, was finally discharged from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, the hospital announced on Wednesday.

The girl, who was born during the 28th week of pregnancy, was delivered in mid-October. The baby's mother had previously suffered four miscarriages and was rushed to the children’s medical center upon delivery.

Doctors organized a special team and adopted kangaroo care by allowing the parents to hold and feed the baby.

The girl has gained about 2 kilograms and overcome many risks and possible complications, doctors said.

There are about 12 million premature babies born in the world every year. China welcomes some 1 million premature babies annually, rating No.2 globally. The number of babies with extremely low weight also increases every year due to medical developments.
