Spring Festival means family gatherings for most Chinese, but it may be a busy period for those in key posts. This year, Changning District has decided to invite families of some professionals to Shanghai.

The district government yesterday released the plan to fund transport and accommodation, as well as arranging pickups, celebrations and other events for the relatives of high-end specialists.

“The effort aims to enhance the feeling of achievement, belonging and pride to the talent and their families and encourage them keep contributing to the city’s development,” said Xu Zejian, deputy Party chief with Changning human resources and social security bureau.

Twenty-seven professionals have been selected to receive the treat from the district government. All of them have to work during the festival.

Huang Fuqiang, an overseas returnee at Shanghai Institute of Ceramics has worked during the festival for over 10 years, monitoring equipment at the labs that must keep running. Sometimes, he sleeps in the office overnight. This year, the district has invited his wife and son who live in Beijing to spend the festival with him.

“Such arrangements can help our scientists concentrate on their research without worrying about their families,” said Peng Fang, an official with the institute. Peng said over 100 scientists like Huang have to work during the festival, some around the clock.

Feng Lei, chief engineer of the Changning section of Beiheng Passage, has to oversee work during the festival. The digging cannot stop.

“It is the first time that I will have to spend the festival in Shanghai,” said Feng, a native of Hebei Province. His parents-in-law will visit for the holiday.

A New Year gala will be held for the professionals and their relatives on February 2, two days before Chinese New Year’s Eve. Relatives will be invited to visit historical sites and exhibitions.
