Prison time for hukou scam father
A man was sentenced to two months and 10 days in detention and fined 2,000 yuan (US$300) yesterday by Changning District People’s Court after forging a birth certificate.
His daughter is a foreign national and, in order to register her as a Shanghai citizen, Gao, who worked for a local sci-tech company and married a foreign woman several years ago, arranged fake documentation.
In 2013, Gao’s foreign wife gave birth to a baby girl, “Su Su,” in Hong Kong, where she was working. The child was then naturalized to her mother’s country.
To inherit his property, Gao wanted Su Su registered as a Shanghai citizen.
Gao then met Cui, who claimed to be a member of Shanxi Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. Cui told Gao that he could obtain documents to allow Su Su to get a Shanghai hukou. Gao paid Cui HK$2,000 (US$255) and received a birth certificate which showed Su Su was born in Shanxi Province.
Gao used the documents to apply for a Shanghai hukou, but in November, police found the birth certificate and other documents to be forged.
Gao was charged with forging the seal of a public institution. Cui is still at large.
