One killed after car drives into pedestrians in Huangpu District

One pedestrian was killed and nine were injured in an accident in downtown Huangpu District on Sunday morning.

A car, driven by a 31-year-old man surnamed Zhao, suddenly lost control and ran into pedestrians at the intersection of Xujiahui Road and Dapu Road at 9:28am, police said.

The victims included nine tourists from Taiwan and one delivery man from Sichuan Province. One of the Taiwan tourists was pronounced dead despite medical treatment, according to the Shanghai Information Office.

Among the injured, five Taiwan tourists and the delivery man have been discharged from hospital, while the other three are still receiving treatment. 

According to the police, the accident happened when Zhao was driving his girlfriend to work. He is now in police custody.

Investigation is underway.
