A different corner of the art market
For many middle-aged fans, “A Different Corner” by George Michael, British singer, songwriter and icon of the 1980s and 1990s, holds a special place in their hearts.
Few of the fans of Michael's music will be aware that the singer was also an art collector of some repute. Some key works from the George Michael Collection are on a global tour, beginning in New York and moving on to Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Shanghai, before returning to London to go under the hammer.
One of the most influential and best-selling recording artists of all time, Michael’s private collection demonstrates strong support for his British contemporaries, artists such as Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Marc Quinn.
The Shanghai preview will run from February 23 to 28 at Christie’s office in the city. The collection will then be sold at Christie’s, London, on March 14. Key works on sale include Tracey Emin's “Drunk to the Bottom of my Soul” and Damien Hirst’s “The Incomplete Truth.”
Michael's group Wham! was one of the first major Western acts to perform in China, playing two concerts in 1985.
Tracey Emin's blanket “Drunk to the Bottom of my Soul” will be on show in Christie’s Shanghai office from February 23 to 28 and will be auctioned at Christie’s, London, on March 14.
