Police officer Zhang Xian donates stem cells on Tuesday in Huashan Hospital, watched by his wife Zhou Lan.

Zhang Xian, a Shanghai police officer, donated hemopoietic stem cells to a child with leukemia on Tuesday, the 18th police officer among 428 donors in Shanghai.

The officer was hospitalized for mild symptoms of diabetes at the end of last year, but the donation won't affect his health, according to the Red Cross Society of China Shanghai Branch.

Zhang, 44, registered to donate the stem cells in 2012, and was informed in November in 2018 that he matched a child with leukemia who was in a critical condition.

He did not hesitate and further blood checks confirmed the match. To streamline the donation, Zhang also discussed with his wife to postpone their plan to have a baby and received his wife's support.
