A plastic and paper material manufacturer was fined 950,000 yuan (US$142,000) for illegally discharging waste water into a rainwater pipe, Shanghai's environmental law enforcement team has announced.

The company, the name of which was not disclosed, is mainly involved in the manufacture of polythene, polystyrene and paper fiber products.

During a random inspection in October, the company was pumping waste water up from the sewage collection pool into the public rainwater pipe.

According to standard procedures, waste water should go through a sludge process before being discharged. The environmental law enforcement team said the company stopped the operation of its sewage treatment facility in July last year and discharged waste water into the rainwater pipe directly.

The environmental authority’s tests showed that the illegally discharged sewage failed to meet standards regarding the index for chemical oxygen and suspended matter in the water.

The law enforcement team said random inspections will continue to be organized on a regular base to supervise companies’ environmental protection measures.

According to a public notification issued by the Shanghai Bureau of Ecology and Environment, the city’s environmental law enforcement team held random inspections in 35 companies and institutions in the fourth quarter of 2018. Seven were found to be violating the law.
