Shanghai Renji Hospital’s Ningbo outlet in neighboring Zhejiang Province began operation on Friday, bringing great convenience to people living in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Top medical specialists from Renji Hospital, a leading public hospital in Shanghai, will work regularly in its Ningbo outlet by offering outpatient services and conducting surgery. In addition to receiving patients, they will streamline academic communication and cooperation with doctors from other hospitals in the region.

“About 80 to 90 percent of my patients are from other provinces, many of whom are from neighboring provinces in the Yangtze River Delta region,” said Dr Ma Xiong from Renji Hospital’s digestive disease department.

Patients in neighboring provinces hailed the opening of the new hospital and expressed relief that they don’t need to go all the way to Shanghai anymore.

“It is so troublesome for us to go to Shanghai to see the leading specialist,” said 36-year-old Wang Fangfang. “I have to arrive in Shanghai the day after my doctor’s clinic and queue in the hospital at 5am in the morning. It usually takes me an entire day for the whole process, and I have to go to Renji Hospital every two to three months."

Wang said that she is happy with the hospital opening locally. “I only need one hour by car to come to the new outlet,” she said.

Dr Li Weiping, president of Renji Hospital, said opening the Ningbo outlet is to better utilize high-quality medical resources from Shanghai and benefit more people. “It will not only (make it) convenient (for) patients but (will) also promote our brand,” he said.
