Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong met Anastasios Papagiannopoulos, president of the Baltic and International Maritime Council, and his delegation on Thursday.

Ying welcomed his guests to attend the BIMCO Shanghai Conference. Saying that China is now the second largest economy in the world, the mayor added that the country will unfalteringly promote economic globalization and trade liberalization, thus bringing more opportunities to the global shipping industry.

As China’s biggest economic center and a core city of the world-class Yangtze River Delta Region, Shanghai is working hard to build itself into an international economic, financial, shipping, and technology & innovation center.

The city has great potential for developing the global shipping industry, having attracted the world’s largest companies in the fields of shipping, ship-building, port management, and port equipment manufacturing.

BIMCO is one of the world’s largest and the most influential shipping industry organization, so Shanghai is willing to further strengthen cooperation and exchange with the council and it hopes more of the council’s members will come to Shanghai and support its efforts in building the city into an international shipping center and share business opportunities, Ying added.

Papagiannopoulos said he is impressed with Shanghai’s tremendous achievements each time he visits the city. Shanghai has made great contribution to the international shipping industry and trade, and the council is willing to deepen its cooperation with Shanghai and China to promote global trade liberalization and Shanghai’s economic development.

BIMCO was founded in Denmark in 1905 and its Shanghai office opened in Pudong’s Lujiazui in 2013, which was the shipping industry’s first high-end functional service agency in the city.
