Incidence of breast cancer keeps rising
The city’s incidence of female breast cancer has risen by 1.8 percent annually in recent years and by 2.4 percent annually among those over 60, Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.
The city figure is higher than the national level, but the morality rate is lower. About 48 percent develop the disease after the age of 60.
The city has a large number of patients living with breast cancer, accounting for 26.5 percent of all female cancer patients, the CDC said.
Those surviving breast cancer for over five years - clinical recovery- account for 88.7 percent, and 79.9 percent of patients survive for beyond 10 years.
“People can reduce the risk of breast cancer with healthy diets, by quitting smoking and drinking, taking enough exercise and receiving regular screening,” said Dr Bao Pingping, director of Shanghai CDC’s department of tumor prevention and control.
The overall incidence of cancer in the city is 229 in 100,000. The incidence among females is slightly higher than among males. The top five female cancers are lung, thyroid, breast, colon and stomach.
