An exhibition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Diligent Work Frugal Study Movement is on display at the Foreign-educated Chinese Museum until March 22. The movement was a series of work-study programs which brought Chinese students to France and Belgium to work in factories as a way to pay for their study of French culture and Western science. Between 1919 and 1920 about 2,000 young Chinese arrived in France to work and study. Among them were future leaders of the Chinese Communist Party such as Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping, as well as others who went on to prominent roles in China. The exhibition uses pictures and documents to reveal students’ revolutionary spirit and patriotism.
