Construction of Shanghai Metro's Chongming Line will break ground this year.

It is one of 138 major construction projects the city will focus on this year, worth a total of 136 billion yuan (US$20.2 billion).

Many of these projects, such as the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory and the east branch of Shanghai Museum, have been attracting tremendous attention both home and abroad.

According to a blueprint of the Chongming Line, it will run between Jinji Road Station in the Pudong New Area and Yu’an Station in Chongming District, covering 44.6 kilometers and eight stations. The construction is scheduled to take five years.

Shanghai Metro said a definite construction plan of the line is yet to be made.

Meanwhile, the Airport Line connecting the city's two airports will start construction this year.

The construction of Line 14 is also making progress, the Metro operator said. A rectangular pipe jacking machine started operation at Jing’an Temple Station last week.

The machine, the largest of its kind used in the city's Metro construction, means there is minimum excavation work, resulting in less disruption for traffic.

After completion, Jing’an Temple Station will be a transfer hub with three Metro lines.

Apart from the Metro, 18 projects to make the city greener and cleaner are also planned, including treatment of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek, as well as greening the public space alongside the waterways.

A new water treatment plant in Baoshan District with cutting-edge technology will be completed this year. The facilities will be underground, while the above-ground space will be developed into a park.
