Detention over drunk driving, police attack
A 55-year-old man has been detained for allegedly driving while drunk and attacking a police officer, Shanghai police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place last Saturday night in downtown Huangpu District.
The man, surnamed Zang, drove through a police road block at the crossroads of Xizang Road S. and Jinling Road E.
He was stopped by a motorcycle police officer about 3 kilometers away. The police were checking for drunk drivers at the road block.
The police officer, Zhu Jiajing, asked Zang and a woman to step out for an examination, but was attacked by the two, according to the police.
Both were subdued by Zhu’s colleagues a short time later. Zhu was slightly injured.
Zang had his blood alcohol level measured on the scene at 131mg/100ml, surpassing the standard of 80mg/100ml for drunk driving.
Both Zang and the 37-year-old woman surnamed Liu could face the criminal charges of dangerous driving and impeding the work of government officials, police said.
Zang was driving Liu’s car. Liu, who was also drunk, didn’t stop Zang from taking the wheel, according to the police.
