Officials inspect children's clothing in Minhang District on Wednesday.

Potentially hazardous children's clothing sold at the Mixc Shopping Center in Minhang District has been taken off the shelves.

The 131 children's skirts branded Alice Pi. and Amly Junior, with a product value of 180,000 yuan (US$26,800), had suspected problems with the design of back and waist belts as well as sharp edges to garment accessories, according to the Shanghai Market Supervision and Management Bureau.

"Children may get hurt by the flawed designs," said Shen Yueming, an expert with the Shanghai Institute of Quality Inspection and Technical Research.

A skirt branded Alice Pi. and priced at nearly 2,000 yuan was found to have a sharp pin on the back.

Another Alice Pi. skirt priced at 1,700 yuan was found to have a belt longer than standard.

There has been several accidents associated with this problem both at home and abroad, said Shen.

In one accident, a waist belt was caught in a bus door, and a child was dragged for nearly 10 meters.

The clothing has been sent for further tests.

The bureau checked about 40 types of children's clothing at the shopping center and found 19 suspected issues. There were also labelling problems.

Since 2016, the bureau has inspected about 80 children's clothing companies, with 25 cases solved, involving about 1.3 million yuan of products.

About 2.3 million yuan of illegal profits and fines were involved, and about 2,000 substandard clothing items were seized or destroyed.
