Domestically-developed aneurysm treatment gets certified
A locally-developed abdominal aortic aneurysm stent graft system has received registration certification from the National Medical Products Administration of China, Shanghai MicroPort Endovascular MedTech Co announced on Thursday.
The independently-developed system is also the company’s second approved offering after the national government introduced the Special Review and Approval Procedure for Innovative Medical Devices (also known as the “Green Path”) to boost medical innovation.
An aortic aneurysm is a medical condition which results in an enlarged aorta. The condition can be caused by a weakened or inelastic area of the aorta wall. People who are over 60 years old, smoke, have hypertension or heart disease face higher risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm, which can be fatal upon rupture.
Endovascular abdominal aorta therapy with stent graft can block an aneurysm and restore normal blood flow. The system involves the placement of a stent graft within the aorta to divert high-pressure blood flow from the aneurysm wall, following the introduction of the stent graft with a specially designed delivery system through the femoral artery.
