Shanghai Party Secretary Li Qiang met Jose Vinals, group chairman of Standard Chartered PLC, and his delegation on Monday.

Li said the maiden China International Import Expo held last year provided Shanghai with a lot of opportunities for the city’s development and to build itself into an international financial center.

The financial sector is one of the city’s pillar industries and the city will maintain the opening-up of the industry to attract various financial institutes under the condition of preventing financial risks.

Standard Chartered has participated in and witnessed Shanghai and China’s opening-up and reforms and Shanghai’s efforts in building itself into an international financial center. So the city hopes that Standard Chartered will seize its advantages to carry out more cooperation with Shanghai in expanding its businesses and developing more quality financial products.

The city will continue to optimize its business environment for various companies and keep providing more quality services, Li added.

Vinals said that Standard Chartered will support China’s opening-up of the financial industry and Shanghai’s efforts to build itself into an international financial center. Standard Chartered chose to host its global board meeting in Shanghai because the company wants to tap further into the Chinese market and participate in the city’s efforts to develop into an international financial center.

Zhuge Yujie, secretary-general of the CPC Shanghai Committee, was also present during the meeting.
