A man has been detained for five days for filing false police reports in an attempt to locate his ex-girlfriend, police said on Wednesday.

The Zhoupu Police Station in the Pudong New Area received a call from the man, surnamed Xia, at 6:30am on March 26. Xia claimed that acts of prostitution were happening in an apartment building on Kangshen Road.

Xia said he knew the name of the woman involved but didn’t know which room she was in.

Police arrived at the address and found the apartment where the woman was staying, but nobody was home.

Xia called the police again at 10am on the same day with a similar report, and police made another trip to the address. Once again, the apartment was empty.

Questioned by the police, Xia confessed that he was filing false reports against his ex-girlfriend, whom he was trying to locate. Xia apparently hoped law enforcement would help him find her exact address.

Police warn the public not to waste their time by filing false reports.
