An intelligent garbage sorting system is being used in Jinqiao Town in the Pudong New Area to make trash separation easier and more efficient.

Urban management and law enforcement officials made on-site inspections and promotions of garbage sorting operations on Friday at residential complexes in Jinqiao, home to a large number of foreign residents.

At the Yangguang Guoji Apartment residential complex, 15 intelligent garbage sorting installations have been set up.

They contain garbage bins for dry and wet waste, and recycling bins for metal, glass, plastics and paper.

The installations also use swipe cards and bags with QR codes to monitor the waste-sorting practices of local households. Residents can earn points for correctly separating their waste, and these points can be redeemed for household items such as shampoos and soaps.

Data gathered from such intelligent systems can also be used to promote better waste management.

“The use of intelligent technologies has a good effect on garbage sorting, as we found the accuracy rate is high in this community," said Dong Xiaohui, an urban management and law enforcement official at Jinqiao Town.

Jinqiao Town has about 28,000 residents with local residency and about 3,000 expats.
