Drivers held in illegal taxis probe
Four drivers suspected of using illegal taxis to pick up passengers at Pudong International Airport were apprehended by police on Friday morning.
Police had launched an investigation last month in conjunction with the city's transportation commission.
The commission confirmed that four retired legal taxis had been sold out of town, and that the taxis under investigation were likely to be the same vehicles.
With the help of high-resolution monitoring cameras on the city's streets, police soon established the identities of the four drivers.
One was caught near the airport while the other three were caught at home.
The taxis sported different plates, police said, and in one of the cars over 10 plates were found. All the taxis had meters rigged to operate faster than usual, police said.
The investigation is still underway.
