Sleep disorder found in one-in-five locals over 30
About 20 percent of local people over 30 years old have obstructive sleep apnea, which can cause cardiovascular disease and even death, doctors said at a Sino-Japan medical conference on coronary heart disease on Thursday.
Sleep disorders can impair metabolism, immunity and brain function and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia can increase the risk of acute coronary syndrome, hypertension and stroke.
At the same time, as high as 37 percent of people with cardiovascular disease have a sleep disorder, which is a potential target area for the prevention and control of heart disease, doctors from Punan Hospital told the conference.
To enhance research and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, Punan Hospital has teamed up with Japanese doctors on diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
