Shanghai will host a variety of activities such as nature classes and bird observations in the following week to raise people's awareness on bird protection.

The 38th Shanghai Bird Protection Week kicked off at the Chenshan Botanical Garden in Songjiang District on Saturday, with photo exhibitions, seminars on nature education and visits into nature.

In total, 54 activities will be hosted citywide during the week, according to the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

A video "Nature Shanghai" was released for the event during the opening ceremony. Focusing on the city's nature resources, wild animals and plants and the current situation of ecological protection, it displays how the city's 25 million residents co-exist harmoniously with 484 species of birds, 50 varieties of amphibians and reptiles and other animals.

A number of schools were awarded for their outstanding job in the protection of wild animals and plants by greenery authorities, and residents shared their loving stories with birds.

A nature carnival is being held at Chenshan on Saturday and Sunday.

Nature bazaars and reading pavilions have been set up, and a number of "experiences" activities such as nature classes are organized.

You can have fun with interactive games inside nature camps in the garden.

Bird observations — seven this year — will be organized at the Century Park in the Pudong New Area with knowledge on birds promoted.

Participants will walk into parks, greenery, forests, inter-tidal zones and wetlands to find birds such little egret, light-vented bulbul, and magpie.
