Occupying forces sent tumbling out of town
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People‘s Republic of China and the liberation of Shanghai.
Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe and Shanghai Circus School will present a new play “The Battle of Shanghai” at Majestic Theater from May 7 to 9.
The 100-minute play is based on the story of the liberation of Shanghai in 1949.
According to director Li Chunyan, the producers visited many historical sites in the city before they created the play.
“We will take audience back to the city of Shanghai 70 years ago, when many ordinary soldiers sacrificed their lives to protect and liberate the great city,” said director Li.
“We will combine acrobatics with dance and drama to recreate the historical scenes and tell an impelling story.”
Yu Yigang, director of Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe said that it is the first time they have created an acrobatic drama.
It consists of eight scenes with diverse forms of acrobatics, magic and traditional theater. Innovations will also be made in choreography, sets and props.
The play is also scheduled for this year’s Modern Drama Valley, an annual theatrical gala in Shanghai from May 5 to 23.
