Changning's reading week celebrates World Book Day
The 25th World Book Day is being celebrated at reading events all over Changning District this week.
Many of the events are linked to this year’s 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
A poetry competition “Me and my Hometown” will reflect the progress Shanghai has made over the last 70 years and show the people’s love for their metropolis.
A walking tour on Wuyi Road, one of the 64 roads in Shanghai that will never be widened, will take participants past historic buildings on the street, telling some little-known stories of the places that bear witness to the city’s colorful history.
Other events will take place in libraries, book stores, community halls and offices.
A reading center was opened on Sunday by the Orient Publishing Center, Changning Library and The Nice to Meet You Book Store at the opening ceremony of the reading week. It will use resources from the publishing center and library to make it a community living room on residents’ doorsteps.
The center will host book launches and other cultural events.
Liu Peiying, deputy editor-in-chief of the Orient Publishing Center, said the nationwide campaign to promote reading was an important way to help the development of the learning.
