A 39-year-old woman who sold fake MCM bags has been sentenced to three and a half years in jail and fined 500,000 yuan (US$74,627), the Xuhui District People's Court has announced.

Sales totaled nearly 3 million yuan with a profit of more than 300,000 yuan.

The woman, surnamed Wang, began purchasing counterfeit MCM handbags and suitcases from wholesale markets in March 2017. She then resold them on her online store.

In March last year, a customer surnamed Tao realized the bag she had bought from Wang's store was fake and reported it to police.

Officers later raided Wang's residence and seized fake MCM key chains, wallets, handbags and backpacks. The products were worth about 1,700 yuan.

During the hearing, Wang's lawyer said there was not enough evidences to prove all the MCM bags Wang sold were fake as police only had Tao's bag and the seized goods.

Moreover, the sales record on Taobao didn't show all the deals were related to MCM bags.

However, the court said Wang was never authorized to sell MCM products and the retailers where she bought these products were unauthorized.

Since Wang had confessed to police that the bags she sold were all fake, and the sold and seized bags were all confirmed as counterfeit, the court considered all the MCM bags Wang sold were fake.
