40 imported malaria cases reported last year
Shanghai reported 40 cases of malaria last year. All cases were imported and most patients came from Africa, said Shanghai Health Commission.
The city has had no local infections since 2010 and announced the elimination of malaria in 2017.
Though the city has eliminated local malaria, risk of infection is rising due to the increased international collaboration. Anopheles sinensis, a species of mosquito that transmits malaria, is still present in the city.
For National Malaria Day on Friday, the commission held an event at Pudong International Airport to promote prevention and control among tourists.
