Trials of the second phase of the tram system in Songjiang District will begin this month without passengers, Shen Jialin of the tram operator told Shanghai Daily.

If all goes well, it will start taking passengers in August.

The second phase includes the extension of the T2 tram and a section of the T1 tram. The remainder of the T2 line and the new part of the T1 line will form a circular route.

The system opened in December last year. Its first phase was a section of the T2 line between Canghua Road and Zhongchen Road stations, covering 20 stops.

The T1 line soon to open is from Sanxin Road N. Station to Xinmiaosan Road Station by which time passengers can transfer to Line 9 at Songjiang University Town and Songjiang Sports Center stations.

The trams handle 11,000 passengers a day who can use public transportation cards or scan a QR code on their phones.
