Shanghai can expect sunny skies and warm temperatures this week with the mercury topping 31 degrees Celsius on Thursday and Friday.

The week will kick off with some morning fog on Monday. The day will be dry and cloudy with increasing winds and a high of 24 degrees.

It will start to warm up on Tuesday with a high of 27 degrees and a mix of sun and clouds.

On Wednesday, there will be a high of 29 degrees. A high of 31 degrees is expected on Thursday and Friday. The low will range from 16 to 20 degrees during the workdays.

However, it will become cloudy with rain on the weekend.

Sunday afternoon was marked by light pollution with the air-quality index reaching 108 at 4pm. The concentration of main pollutant PM2.5 particles was recorded at 81 micrograms per cubic meter, triple the guideline set by the World Health Organization.

The air will be clean on Monday with the AQI at the good level.

Meanwhile, the city should brace for a tough flood season, the flood-prevention office said on Saturday.

The flood season usually begins in June and lasts until the end of September. But this year, it may come a little earlier.

The office said the city will see a significant increase in rain this year during the flood season compared with last year's 543.2 millimeters.

There will also be more hot days as the subtropical weather is unlikely to move north as it did last year.

In 2018, three typhoons made landfalls.

The office is expecting fewer typhoons to hit Shanghai this year because of the El Nino effect in the Pacific Ocean.

But any that do will be more powerful.
